Nature of problem:
The parabolic cylinder functions U(n,x) occur frequently in statistical thermodynamics. A subroutine for the calculation of the U(n,x) for natural n is provided.

Solution method:
Depending on the values of n and x, series expansions, asymptotic expansions, and backward recurrence are used.

Restrictions:
n=0,1,2,... 100, 0<= x <=100

Unusual features:
In some of the routines quadruple precision must be used. On a VAX, the use of the qualifier /g_float is necessary in order to avoid over- and underflow.

Running time:
0.1 seconds on VAX 9410 and 2.6 seconds on HP 9000/825
