Nature of problem:
GENBIN - generates a complete list of basis functions, represented as binary strings, of a partition of U(n) x SU(m). PATERN - determines the positions of differing entries in two binary strings generated by GENBIN. This is done for the analysis of complex spectra using the unitary group methods.

Solution method:
GENBIN - use of bit masking and string comparison.
PATERN - use of logical AND and exclusive OR operations between pairs of strings.

Restrictions:
GENBIN - as given the program does not treat mixed configurations.
PATERN - none.
