Nature of problem:
This code finds approximate solutions to the Grad-Shafranov equation describing scalar pressure-balance equilibria for axisymmetric tokamak plasmas. A Fourier series expansion of the flux surface coordinates (R,Z) is made in terms of two new coordinates (rho, theta), and the resulting equation is conveniently reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE's) using a variational principle. The solution of these simple equations with pressure and current as driving functions yields, in principle, a complete description of the equilibrium.

Solution method:
The system of ODE's is solved numerically by a shooting method using D02AGF, a suite of subroutines in the NAG library.

Restrictions:
Complete axisymmetry is assumed, as well as up-down symmetry about the toroidal midplane.

Unusual features:
VMOMS uses a suite of routines D02AGF developed by I. Gladwell and available from the NAG library of mathematical software. An annotated version of these routines is included in the source file. A data file is generated for easy postprocessing of the results and subsequent plotting. A plotting routine, adapted for use on the DEC PDP-10, has been included as a guide to generating the plots.
