Nature of problem:
The Skyrme model is an O(4) nonlinear sigma model with an additional stabilizing term. The model serves as large N approximation to quantum chromodynamics. The program simulates thermal equilibrium on a two, three or four dimensional lattice.
A modified Metropolis algorithm is used for a Monte Carlo simulation of the system on a lattice. New configurations are generated site by site and execution of the procedure is accelerated by performing the Metropolis algorithm several times on a given site before proceeding to the next.
The program requires about 1/4 (2/3, 1) of a millisecond per spin update in the 2-dimensional (3-, 4-dimensional) case on a VAX 11/780. The test runs need about 1 minute each.
